Legend said that nearly six centuries ago a snowy-haired artist came to Bat Trang Village from Bo Bat Village in Thanh Hoa Province to set himself up in business and taught the locals the rotating table technique of ceramic production.
According to historical documents, Bat Trang Ceramics Village has existed for about 500 years and flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries. For many centuries, the village has been famous for its beautiful and durable ceramic products which are now exported around the world. For years, the high quality products of Bat Trang were mainly worshipped items, such as candlesticks and incense-burners, but now, due to the customers’ demand for more diverse items, household commodities and fine art articles such as bowls, plates, flower vases, jars, planting pots, statues, etc are also produced. Before starting a product, the pottery-artist has to select appropriate soils. According to Bat Trang artists, ceramic work is like a living organism that is the harmonious combination of five basic elements of metal, wood, water, fire and earth. Then it is up to the artist to create a piece that is harmonious in composition and elegant in colours. Seeing pottery articles made from Bat Trang Village, one will surely think of skillful hands of talented artists who combine earth and fire to create products for life.
