Vietnam is honored to become the host nation of the 39th International Physics Olympiad, to be held in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, from July 20 to 29, 2008. The Olympiad is being jointly organized by the Ministry of Education and Training and the Vietnamese Physical Society. Hanoi National University of Education has been selected as the main executing institution for the organization of IPhO 2008.
Prof. Dr. Sc. Banh Tien Long, Standing Vice Minister of Education and Training, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Organizing Committee. Prof. Dr. Phan Hong Khoi, President of the Vietnamese Physical Society and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sc. Nguyen The Khoi from Hanoi National University of Education are heading the Academic Committee.
Inviting the Countries to IPhO 2008
On behalf of the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam and the IPhO 2008 Organizing Committee, we are very pleased to invite your country to participate in the 39th International Physics Olympiad, to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam, July 20-29, 2008. The Organizing Committee is looking forward to hosting leaders, contestants, observers and visitors from your country in this international prestigious competition. The aims of this competition for individual secondary-school students are to raise awareness among young people of Physics as one of the bases of scientific research, to promote future international collaborations and to encourage friendships within the scientific community.
Requirements for Team Participants
According to the IPhO statutes, each national team will comprise up to five students and two leaders. The contestants shall be students of general or technical secondary schools i.e. schools which cannot be considered technical colleges. Students who have finished their school graduating examinations in the year of the competition can be members of the team as long as they have not commenced their university studies. The age of the students should not exceed twenty years, as of June 30th, 2008. The team leaders should be physics teachers or specialists who can speak English.
Fees and Expenses
All participating countries are encouraged to contribute a voluntary fee of US$3,500. This will cover meals, accommodation and official social events during the designated period of the Olympiad. Observers and visitors are most welcome, but they must pay the official fees of US$1,200 for observers and US$1,100 for visitors. Registration information for these participants will be announced in subsequent circulars. Observers are allowed to attend all Olympiad meetings, including the meetings of the International Board, but without rights of voting and discussion.
Accommodation and Transportation from/to the Airport
Arrangements will be made for participants to stay at hotels in Hanoi. Transportation from Noibai International airport to hotels in Hanoi and vice versa will be arranged by the Organizing Committee at no additional cost.

The Organizing Committee is pleased to welcome all countries registering to take part in IPhO 2008. The success of this event depends on the participation and involvement of your country. As a first step, please complete the following form: CONFIRMATION FORM OF PARTICIPATION IPhO 2008. We need this information to send by post an official letter of invitation to participate in IPhO 2008 to your Minister of Education or the equivalent in your country. In addition, this information is necessary for communication with the contact person in your country.
